![]() ![]() Let me say here and now that I didn't then and still don't think the literary genius title fits me. Miss Duplantis never made fun of anyone or anything. When she called my name, naturally I thought she was making fun of my paper, but I should have known better. She held up one paper and said, in effect, that she didn't realize she had a literary genius in her class, or some such thing. I had done the report hurriedly and figured I'd be graded accordingly.Ī day or two later Miss Duplantis returned our papers with comments on how well we had done. I really didn't expect an especially good grade. I wrote my report and handed it in the next day. I guess it was fortunate for me that I scribbled some of the more important points he made. I made notes from the president's talk as I went along. I had so much homework that night that I listened to the radio (there was no television then) as I worked on my other homework. The president had what was called "fireside chats" in which he talked to the people of the United States in an easy, informal manner. Roosevelt speak and write a short essay on the contents of his speech. "Miss Duplantis" gave us an assignment to listen to President Franklin D. Teachers gave homework then just as they do now. I was in high school and I had Tracy Duplantis, now gone to her heavenly reward, as an English teacher. ![]() I like to think of one such moment in my life. One's decisions, mistakes and successes are defining moments. How does one name a defining moment when one's life is filled with defining moments? I think every milestone is a defining moment: birth, marriage, the birth of each child, almost every decision in that child's life. If someone asked you to name a defining moment in your life, could you name one right off the bat? I couldn't. ![]()
